The Sinking City is an action adventure game in a horror convention, enriched with RPG elements, developed by the Ukrainian studio Frogwares - authors of warmly received productions devoted to the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Interestingly, the described title was initially created as Call of Cthulhu, which was to be published by Focus Home Interactive. However, when the creators came under Bigben Interactive's wing in May 2015, they had to significantly rebuild their work, making it an original game inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft.
Plot
The Sinking City takes us on a journey to the United States in the 1920s to the gloomy town of Oakmont, Massachusetts, which was hit by a massive flood caused by supernatural forces. Detective Charles W. Reed was responsible for investigating this case. He learns not only the causes of this phenomenon, but also encounters madness and doubt, which is becoming more and more prevalent both people of Oakmont and in himself.
Mechanics
In The Sinking City the action was presented from the third person perspective (TPP). The authors make available to us a city consisting of several districts (the game world is the largest of the previously created by the Frogwares studio), in which we move both on foot, as well as using a boat or a diving suit. The driving force behind the game are the tasks assigned by neutral characters in any order, each of which can be done in several ways (including using Reed's ability to watch ghosts from the past). As the plot develops in a non-linear way, it has several endings - the ones we will see determine our actions in the course of adventure.
The game does not lack clashes with opponents straight from nightmare (smaller ones, whose elimination is not a major problem, and also much more powerful, in a way, acting as bosses). We eliminate them using a wide range of firearms from the era; the arsenal includes a revolver, rifle, shotgun, or even grenades; and the protagonist can set traps for adversaries. In addition, as he progresses, the hero develops his abilities, which are useful both in solving puzzles and during explorations and clashes with his opponents. It is worth to remember, that a detective exposed to macabre views is gradually subjected to a madness that manifests itself for example through hallucinations.
Technical aspects
The three-dimensional graphics of The Sinking City are kept in a dark style; the attention is drawn to both the carefully designed buildings, which evoke associations with the Victorian era, as well as disturbing models of characters and terrifying silhouettes of opponents.
