Plot
The game continues the storyline started in the first part - its action starts five years later in Jackson, Wyoming. We will visit Jackson known from the first part and the ruins of Seattle. This time the game has two main characters - Ellie, the girl who supported the player in The Last of Us and Abby, the new character from WLF faction. However, we will also see Joel, the protagonist of the first game, and a lot of new characters belonging to two rival factions - WLF and Scar. The main theme of the story is "how far would you go to get justice for the people who hurt the ones you love?
Game mechanics
In terms of game mechanics, The Last of Us 2 develops ideas from the first game. We get, once again, an action adventure game in which the camera is placed behind the character (we control the lone female protagonist, although sometimes she is supported by her companions, who are controlled by the artificial intelligence). The player explores maps with a partially open structure and eliminates enemies. Ellie has also learned to swim and dive - many secrets are hidden behind flooded corridors and many times we have to get wet.
While playing we can experience brutal direct confrontations, but often we also have to rely on stealthy approach. In clashes we use both cold and firearms, but the latter is hindered by a small number of ammunition found during the exploration. Inflicting wounds, however, has a greater impact on the capabilities of enemies than in The Last of Us (for example, by shooting in the leg, we can make it difficult for the opponent to move). As we progress in the game we can also develop the skills of the protagonist. We have five development trees unlocked along with the progress in the game. We develop, among others, shooting precision, reloading speed, but also the ability to produce more items using less materials. Abby's gameplay is different from Ellie's. Abby is more physically fit, has different weapons and can develop other skills.
In comparison to the first part, the developers have significantly improved the artificial intelligence of enemies. They also now use the help of dogs, which can sniff out Ellie. As a result, a completely new mechanic was introduced to the stealth system - we have to take into account another factor and look for ways to mask their scent. There is also a new type of infected, called Shambler, which releases poisonous gas on close contact, and on top of that, it explodes after death.
Game modes
Unlike the first part, The Last of Us: Part 2 does not offer a multiplayer mode. Gameplay is limited to the story campaign.
Technical aspects
The Last of Us: Part II features beautiful, 3D graphics. The developers did their best to make their game as realistic as possible, taking full advantage of the potential of the PlayStation 4 console. We have well-crafted and brilliantly animated characters, sharp textures, believable terrain geometry and a very convincing lighting system. Weather effects are also impressive. There's also the typical Naughty Dog attention to detail. For example, all of the game's enemies - including dogs - have their own names to call each other by.
Facilitating access
The game has very extensive accessibility modes. This makes TLOU2 accessible to people with a variety of vision, hearing and movement impairments, and even those suffering from motion sickness.
