Quilts and Cats of Calico

Quilts and Cats of Calico is a puzzle game, a digital version of the Calico board game, in which we create quilts from colorful, patterned hexagons. The creators of the game are the independent Polish studio Monster Couch, which has already produced another warmly received digital adaptation of the board game - Wingspan.

Plot

In the extraordinary world of the City of Cats, inspired by the works of Studio Ghibli, we are trying to achieve success as a quilt maker. By perfecting our craft and workshop, we meet many people, including friends (also feline ones), to whom we do favors. When we'll later face a person wanting to dominate this world of cats and people, their help may prove invaluable.

Mechanics

Our task is to "sew" the quilt, i.e. arrange it from hexagonal fragments in various colors and patterns. We must do it in a way as to fulfill as many main and secondary goals as possible (matching the cats' preferences or enabling sewing buttons), which gives us points. In every move, we can add one tile from the two we own to the board and draw the next one from the three available on the table, drawn randomly from the pool.

Although the rules of the game are simple, it requires developing a strategy for several moves ahead, as fulfilling several requirements at once can prove to be problematic. Every player creates their own quilt, but the pieces are chosen from one pool. Victory is ensured by the highest number of points scored, regardless of whether they come from main or side objectives.

The game is accompanied by various cats, walking, playing and taking naps on the created quilt. We can interact with them - pet and shoo them away when they interfere too much with work. We can also create our own cat companion - choose the color and length of the fur and equip it with clothes and accessories.

Game modes

Quilts and Cats of Calico features a story mode and skirmishes - against AI at various difficulty levels or with other people online or locally.

Technical aspects

The author of the music in the game is Pawel Gorniak, the creator of the soundtrack of Wingspan.
