The Thaumaturge: Why are my attacks ineffective? The Thaumaturge guide, walkthrough

Why did the attacked enemy in The Thaumaturge receive only minimal damage? This guide page explains how to identify and eliminate traits and resistances in enemies.

Last update: 04 March 2024

Why did the party's attacks suddenly become very weak? This is a common problem when playing The Thaumaturge, and on this page of our guide, we will help you overcome and solve it. Here you will learn how to recognize and read enemy Traits, how Resistances work, and how to deprive the opponents of their additional protection.

Traits of enemies

1 - The Thaumaturge: Why are my attacks ineffective? - FAQ - The Thaumaturge - game guide
  1. From the moment you advance to Act 1, you may start encountering enemies with full or partial resistance to Wiktor's and his Salutors' attacks. This is a serious problem, as ignoring resistances will result in your standard attacks dealing minimal damage e.g. even as low as 1-3 points per attack.
  2. The reason for your attacks dealing meagre damage is that the enemy has a Trait that guarantees him resistance to certain types of damage. To recognize/read the trait, point the cursor to the icons found left from enemy's health bar. This will make a window appear with information regarding the type and effect of the Trait.
  3. The most common traits are Resistances. In our example (screenshot) the active trait of the enemy lowers the power of standard attacks by 80%. Sometimes, a Resistance may provide complete invulnerability to standard attacks.
  4. Aside from Resistances, the enemy may have a different sometimes unique bonus equipped e.g. health regeneration every turn. Regardless of how powerful a Trait is, your priority should be removing it before proceeding to attacking.

Depriving an enemy of a trait

2 - The Thaumaturge: Why are my attacks ineffective? - FAQ - The Thaumaturge - game guide
  1. The source of Traits in enemies are different Dimensions. You can destroy and remove them by attacking the enemy with a specific Salutor, e.g. the one from the same Dimension as the Trait. The game will help you by telling you which Salutor needs to be used. In the example from the screenshot, the game informs that you should switch to Bukavac.
  2. You can attack with any skill of the Salutor, even one of non-offensive abilities. We recommend choosing fast skills i.e. those with lowest preparation/casting time. Thanks to that, Salutor may manage to remove a Trait even before Wiktor lands his first normal attack.

Alternative solutions to the Resistance problem

3 - The Thaumaturge: Why are my attacks ineffective? - FAQ - The Thaumaturge - game guide
  1. In the initial hours of the gameplay, you may encounter a problem of not having the needed skill to destroy the Trait. An example of such a situation is in the screenshot - the game mentions that to use the ability, you require 4 points of the Deed Dimension.
  2. This may be caused by lack of a Salutor from the given Dimension. A solution may be proceeding with the main quests until you unlock Lelek (Mind Dimension) and Weles (Word Dimension) Salutors. With them, you should now have a Salutor of every Dimension (there are 4 of them).
4 - The Thaumaturge: Why are my attacks ineffective? - FAQ - The Thaumaturge - game guide
  1. A temporary solution to the problem may be also avoiding standard attacks and applying negative statuses on enemies.
  2. The ideal "curse" for this is Suffering. Inflicting this status on enemy will make him lose several health points per turn. An additional advantage of Suffering is that this curse can be stacked up to 4 times on the same enemy. With more stacks, the damage inflicted will be much larger.
  3. An alternative method may be depriving the opponent of all his Focus. This will make a Strong Attack possible that even in its weakened form should deal a lot of damage.
