Leveling up your Wiktor is a very important part of the gameplay in The Thaumaturge, as this is the only way to improve the character's statistics and gain new abilities/skills. On this page of our guide, we show the basic ways of getting XP and explain how Thaumaturge Points gain is related to your experience level.

Uses of Thaumaturgy Points

1. To gain Thaumaturgy Points i.e. means of developing the hero, you need to reach new experience levels. Every new level reached equals 1 Thaumaturgy Point.
2. Thaumaturgy Points are used to buy abilities/skills and their respective upgrades. Each item from the skill tree may cost 1 or more points. It is worth saving points for more worthwhile/costly skills, as they may make combat easier or increase Wiktor's survivability.
3. For each skill/ability bought, you'll also receive a permanent passive bonus e.g. a few extra points to Health.
4. Developing individual skill trees is also rewarded with points to various Dimensions, which current distribution you can see in the bottom left corner of the screen. Dimension points are useful when making more complex Observations and affect the availability of unique dialogue options.

Combat

1. The basic way of amassing XP is winning fights. You can increase the XP gain thanks to optional battles - opponents to fight may appear in already visited districts e.g. but at different times of the day. Especially nighttime is known for its large numbers of characters looking for a scrap.
2. You can provoke some fights with appropriate dialogue options. This is often how optional battles happen. In you decided to avoid hostilities, there will not be any additional rewards.

Quests

1. Another important way of gaining XP is completing main and side quests stored in Wiktor's journal. Main quests especially are rewarded with a lot of XP. The reward will be there for you regardless of way you conclude the quest.
2. Look for quest givers - they may be marked with an exclamation mark icon or sometimes quests are initiated after finding a plot item.

Collectibles

1. XP is also received for each found secret. Among the collectibles in the game, we have Stereoscopic Photographs, Fashion Magazines, Gramophone Recordings, and Sketches.
2. Some collectibles are in plain view, getting others may be more complex e.g. having to find all traces related to an event/case in the city. Also remember to explore Warsaw's district at various times of the day, as some collectibles only appear e.g. at nighttime.

Observations and documents

Additional small XP gain can be received for:

1. each activated Observation - use Perception to thoroughly scan every new visited location.
2. every found Text - this category includes various letters, raports, or newspapers.
